Radio Plus journalists report the testimony of a Reunionese who lives in La Possession and who is currently on vacation in Sister Island. “In my room, we saw a big black smoke through the window, I went to take a look and saw that the straw roofs and the trees were starting to catch fire. So I told my wife to get ready real quick“, says Mathieu Van Hoolan.

The hotel would have taken entirely in the space of only ten minutes, specifies this witness who left to take refuge on the beach. “70% of the hotel must have burned down. It’s very windy today, so the fire grew very quickly and swallowed a good part of the hotel.“.

The equivalent of the Ministry of the Interior in Mauritius said that more than 50 rooms of the establishments were destroyed by the flames. According to the management of the tourist establishment, no casualties are to be deplored and all customers and staff have been evacuated. “Guests will be relocated to nearby hotels and the hotel will close once the situation is fully under control. The hotel’s priority remains the safety of its guests and staff.“, she says in a press release. This also indicated that the firefighters of Flacq were mobilized on the fire.
The Mauritian authorities have also announced that they have opened an investigation to shed light on the origin of this terrible disaster.
