The script for the fifth part of the “Lethal Weapon” saga is finished, the actors are ready… But the project is on hold for the moment due to the merger between Warner and Discovery.
35 years after the first Lethal Weapon and 24 years after the fourth opus, Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh are still waiting to return to the front of the stage because no they are not “too old for this bullshit”.
In project since 2008, Lethal Weapon 5 is once again being talked about. Last November, Mel Gibson announced that he was going to direct this fifth opus in order to continue the work of his friend the director Richard Donner, who died in July 2021.
The actor, who must also reprise his role as Martin Riggs in this film supposed to be broadcast on HBO Max, specified: “This will be the final chapter. It is a duty and a privilege to carry out this project. It’s very exciting ! But it will be the last, I promise you.”
But today the project is once again put on hold. Mel Gibson points to the Warner Bros. merger. / Discovery and the various changes initiated by the new CEO David Zaslav. The website IndieWire reports that Zaslav has put production on Lethal Weapon 5 on hold.
Mel Gibson told the specialized site: “The only delay is due to the upheavals at Warner, the arrival of Discovery and the new Boss. They are in the process of being overhauled. It always takes time for these companies to regroup, which has caused a delay, but I’m pretty confident that we’ll be able to get the movie back on its feet and shoot it probably in the first quarter of the new year.“
The director and actor promises a worthy sequel with “a very good script” by Richard Wenk. “They had a very good model“, continues Gibson. “After Richard’s death, I had the honor of working with the screenwriter. We wrote thinking about what Richard Donner would have wanted and we are satisfied with the result.you.”
Mel Gibson is set to co-star in Lethal Weapon 5 with lifelong teammate Danny Glover (Roger Murtaugh) and Bob Jennings. Let’s bet that the success of Top Gun: Maverick will make Warner’s new CEO want to try to relaunch Lethal Weapon…
