SEOUL, Sept. 23 (Yonhap) — The requirement to wear masks outdoors at gatherings of more than 50 people, concerts, shows and sporting events will be completely lifted from Monday, Sept. 26. Prime Minister Han Duck-soo announced this on Friday morning during a meeting of the Central Headquarters for Disasters and Security Countermeasures.
“The wave of the new coronavirus (Covid-19) has passed its peak and the government thanks the citizens for their cooperation in respecting preventive measures without systematic restrictions of social distance,” he noted, adding that “the government will lift the restrictive measures with low risk one by one taking into account the prevention situation and the inconvenience suffered by the people while consulting the experts.”
The obligation to wear a mask in interior spaces will still be maintained until further notice. Han noted that this restriction is necessary due to the possibility of a severe flu epidemic and an upsurge in Covid-19 infections during the winter season.
The Prime Minister presented the results of an analysis of antibodies in citizens saying that “97% of those tested have antibodies against Covid-19 through vaccination or contamination”. According to him, the rate of antibodies by natural transmission is 57%. Given that the ratio of cases confirmed by test amounts to 38%, the share of undeclared infected people is around 20%.
